It must have been the Summer of self care/help because all but one of my noteworthy title shares, thus far, fall into that category. Maybe it's my educational background, but I love this genre. Whether you're hibernating and staying cool in the AC, or taking your books to the beach these shares are uplifting, inspiring and optimistic, but by no means current publications. I hope you enjoy as much as I did. Love you, LP.
The Universe Has Your Back: Transform Fear to Faith by Gabrielle Bernstein.
I don't love love Gabby B like most people, I don't follow her on Instagram, nor do I live by her every single word, but her first book I enjoyed when I was reading in transition from counseling to teaching Yoga full time. I gave her recent book a whirl and was so pleased. It wasn't over the top, it was relatable to all socio-economic states, and it was practical.
Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert.
This was a very short read (or listen, Audible) but it was packed with bold ideas to apply to your life that were possible. I always have a soft spot in my heart for EG, simply because of Eat, Pray, Love.
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.
This was a selection for bookclub and suggestion from my friend Dana Kear, yoga teach and mama bear in Saratoga Springs, NY. It took a while to get into, but once I was able to sit down and focus it was SO good.
Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes.
To be honest, I picked this up last summer. I got about a quarter of the way in and I couldn't get on board. There were a lot of Grey's Anatomy references and I hadn't kept up with that show. Fast forward this summer, where in my 2 week post-vacation depression/hibernation/isolation where I watched A LOT of Grey's, I picked the book up again. My friend and fellow yoga teacher, Ashely, suggested I read since I had finished Grey's and didn't know what to do with my life. This time I really enjoyed and felt connected to it. Shonda is brilliant and strong and it all comes together with this book.
Food Freedom Forever: Letting Go of Bad Habits, Guilt, and Anxiety Around Food by Melissa Hartwig.
This will be a whole different blog post, but if you know me, you know that body image/self acceptance/food addiction is something I care deeply about. Last summer I completed my first #Whole30. This summer I did it again, but paired it with Melissa's book, which I'm thankful I did. It was very applicable and realistic. Melissa is someone I'm still trying to figure out if I jive with or not, but her words in this book were very helpful.
Goddesses Never Age: The Secrete Prescription for Radiance, Vitality and Well Being by Christiane Northrup.
I'm about half way done with this summer read suggestion and I LOVE IT. My friend Janelle Brown read this last year and I'm finally getting around to it. This is really pivotal for women. It connects the physical body with the emotional body in a way most can understand.
