And We'll All Float On Ok.

Modest Mouse may be making a killing when it comes to advertising for the not so recent craze of "Floating." If you were a listener to, "Purposefully Yogini." on iTunes you may have realized I have a slight obsession with trying different healing modalities or therapeutic techniques for self care and to make the physical body feel better, which I believe leads to feeling better in other areas of life too. I reported on Cryotherapy, Chiropratic Care, Yin Yoga, Mental Health Counseling, and more. The one thing I didn't get a chance to report on was Float Therapy.
Last week I was chatting with a student about it, and the next day she came in gifting me a certificate to go! It couldn't have come at a more perfect time too with how my body feels since incorporating soccer back in. I scheduled my appointment and went first thing Monday morning.
Float pods or tanks use Epsom Salt (Magnesium) to make the 10 inch, or so, level water more saturated in order for you to float. Think Dead Sea! Magnesium is known to help balance calcium levels in the body, reduce stress, balance hormones, normalize blood pressure and improve sleep! Yes I want all of that, thank you!!!
This was the second time I tried it, but this experience was much more enjoyable. I went to Flourish & Float Center in Bonita Springs, FL. The spa was beautiful and bright. In addition to float pods they offer massage, Hyperbaric chamber, Oxygen Bar, and Infared Sauna. This pod was white, whereas the tank I went into last time was dark. This pod had soft music and a light in it vs. the first one I tried was silent and pitch black. While there are benefits to that, personally I felt more relaxed this time.
One can float for up to 55 minutes. I was asked to shower before and after. I was given earplugs and an inflatable neck pillow. As soon as I entered, I felt my body sigh. I was able to drift off for about 20-30 minutes (I think) then my eyes softly opened and I did some gentle joint movement (which was hard since you're floating and the salt is serious!)
Immediately after I felt so calm. My body physically and emotional felt relaxed and all I wanted to do was sit down. I was requested to hydrate a lot as the epsom is also a detoxifying agent. Monday's are my "day off," I only teach one class, so after my float I went to Amy's Yin Yoga class at Yoga Loft and woah. It was my most relaxed Yin class yet, and believe me Yin is already so amazingly relaxing.
Yesterday was a full moon in Aquarius (the water sign) which I thought ironic that I spent part of the day floating in water, but because of the Full Moon I had a restless night sleep on Sunday (yes I blame the moon!) I got home Monday, made dinner and the second my head hit my pillow I fell asleep so quickly, I am fairly certain my good night's sleep came from the magnesium.
I would recommend everyone to try it once, because you may just love it. Personally, I love the techniques that are popping up left and right that can serve as preventative measures to keep us out of the doctors office and allow us to lead thriving and pleasurable lives. Love you, LP.
